The earliest contemporary reference to poker is from a 1904 issue of the New York Sun. Subsequent research into the game’s history led to the publication of R F Foster’s book Practical Poker in 1905. The book gathered together the fruits of this research and additional material from Frederick Jessel’s collection of card-game literature housed in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. It is from this publication that the current standard rules of poker are derived.
